Why does WoodWorks® supply its engineering software free to students and professors?

It is important that engineering students be familiar with the design principles for wood structures, since the majority of housing in Canada and the US are built with wood, as are an increasing amount of low and midrise buildings. The need to move towards "engineered" buildings (even for small buildings that have been prescriptively designed in the past) has also increased.

The purpose of distributing WoodWorks® Design Office free to students is to introduce them to a valuable wood design tool. Ideally, the software is introduced in the beginning of any course that includes wood design and used throughtout the school year to help check the design principles taught. Assignments that include using WoodWorks® helps provide a better understanding of how to use the software, and enables students to finish the year using WoodWorks® software to design a final project. We believe this will encourage graduating students to specify wood products confidently and efficiently in their future design careers.

How does the Education Version compare to the regular version?

The education version functions as the full Design Office version, but does not include the online .pdf files of the design standards (CSA O86/NDS).
