Honor Awards
Big Ten Burrito Restaurant
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Client: Big Ten Burrito Restaurant
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Architect: Ply Architecture
Ann Arbor, Michigan

General Contractor: Ply Architecture
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Photos: Howard Doughty
Bay Village, Ohio

Jury: This small project explores the possibilities of what wood can do. It is a marriage of common materials and digital machining technology that leads to creative results within a confined space.

Long Residence
Orcas Island, Washington

Architect: Cutler Anderson Architects
Bainbridge Island, Washington

Structural Engineer: Coffman Engineers
Spokane, Washington

General Contractor: Alford Homes
Poulsbo, Washington

Photos: Art Grice Photography
Bainbridge Island, Washington

Jury: An elegant house in which the clear heirarchy of the primary and secondary wood framing, and the transparency of the glazing prevents the structure from overpowering. The innovation of the tripod columns offers the nostalgia of a lean-to while providing a modern, simple connection to the roof, making it appear to float.

Solebury School
New Hope, Pennsylvania

Architect: Hillier Architecture
Princeton, New Jersey

Structural Engineer: Greenman-Pedersen, Inc.
Scranton, Pennsylvania

Site/Civil Engineer: Van Cleef Engineering Associates

Photos: Albert Vecerka, Esto Photographics Inc.

Jury: A current expression in style and function of the familiar and random arrangement of farm buildings carefully and intimately scaled. The project’s craftsmanship and humanity are exposed by fresh, rhythmic patterns of wood siding and fenestration.

Cognito Films
Culver City, California

Client: Cognito Films
Culver City, California

Architect: Randall Stout Architects, Inc.
Los Angeles, California

Structural Engineer: John A. Martin & Associates
Los Angeles, California

General Contractor: Crommie Construction Corporation
Los Angeles, California

Photos: Joshua White
Culver City, California

Jury: A seemingly primitive building technology, as in the building of a fort, but sophisticated in its creation of artful simplicity and space that celebrates the tectonic quality of timber.  The arrangement and connections are so simple that one can imagine the stacked timbers re-use at some time in the future.

Merit Awards
Modular 1 House
Kansas City, Kansas

Client: City Vision Ministries
Kansas City, Kansas

Architect: Studio 804, Inc./ Dan Rockhill
Lawrence, Kansas

Structural Engineer: Norton & Schmidt Consulting Engineers

Photos: Dan Rockhill
Lawrence, Kansas

Jury: The project demonstrates the clever use of factory-built, mass production technology to lower costs while creating living space of exceptional value. Students learned the process of integrating factory manufacturing with on-site construction, and the selection of materials for aesthetics, durability, renewability, and economy.

Yin Yu Tang House
Salem, Massachusetts

Client: Peabody-Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts/ Brookfield Arts Foundation, Boston, Massachusetts

Architect: John G. Waite Associates, Architects
Albany, New York

Structural Engineer: ARUP
Cambridge, Massachusetts

General Contractor: Liberty Street Restoration Company

Citation Awards
Sauna Pavilion
Whidbey Island, Washington

Architect: Webster Wilson
Seattle, Washington

General Contractor: Webster Wilson
Seattle, Washington

Photos: Mark Wilson

Jackson Meadow
Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Architect: Salmela Architect and Coen + Stumpf

Structural Engineer: Carroll Franck & Associates
St. Paul, Minnesota

Photos: Peter Bastianelli-Kerze
Eveleth, Minnesota

Jury: Drawn from the Scandinavian roots of northern Minnesota, the housing development is assembled as a village with conversation between houses, and serves as a model for other developers. Houses are set directly on the prairie, rather than merging with it, so that the two co-habit in a delicate balance. Details such as asymmetric gable roofs, and cut-outs in facades, are playful and inventive.

Kate & Laurence Eustis Chapel
New Orleans, Louisiana

Client: Ochsner Clinic Foundation
New Orleans, Louisiana

Architect: Eskew+Dumez+Ripple
New Orleans, Louisiana

General Contractor: Construction South
New Orleans, Louisiana

Photos: Timothy Hursley

Jury: An imaginative detailing of wood seemingly woven as a textile that transforms the hospital environment into a quiet retreat. Light penetrating the wooden shroud has an ethereal effect, providing an intimately enclosed space that does not confine the meditator.

Canopy Colonnade – The Village [at Avon]
Avon, Colorado

Client: Traer Creek, LLC
Avon, Colorado

Architect: Arthur Erickson Architectural Group/ Nick Milkovich Architects
Vancouver, British Columbia

Structural Engineer: CASCO [Engineer Home Depot], St. Louis, Missouri; BSW Architects [Engineer Wal-Mart], Tulsa, Oklahoma

Photos: Cameron Owen, Design Workshop
Aspen, Colorado

Jury: Wood makes a welcoming transition for people moving from the parking lot to the impersonal big box store, thus making the project a civic place in ‘nowheres-ville’. The wood canopy reflects light and projects warmth, an effect enhanced at night with up-lighting.

Garden Pavilion
Toronto, Ontario

Client: Susan Brown
Toronto, Ontario

Architect: Paul Raff Studio Inc.
Toronto, Ontario

Design Engineer: Sasquatch
Toronto, Ontario

General Contractor: Sasquatch
Toronto, Ontario

Photos: Steven Evans
Toronto, Ontario

Jury: The project achieves maximum effect with minimal means through the use of economy-grade knotty cedar carefully placed and connected to serve both structurally and ornamentally.  The structure is appropriately delicate as a place for outdoor social gatherings.

Minton Hill House
North Hatley, Quebec

Client: Steve Marien
North Hatley, Quebec

Architect: Affleck + delaRiva Architects
Montreal, Quebec

Structural Engineer: Comtois, Blouin and Associates Consulting Structural Engineers
Montreal, Quebec

General Contractor: RG Construction
North Hatley, Quebec

Photos: Marc Cramer Photographer

Jury: A simple, beautifully proportioned house in which wood does not overpower.  The contrast with green stone and glass makes the wood feel warmer.  Floating on slender steel columns above the open interior, the planar wood ceiling warms the space below with simple grace.
