Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO)

For over five years, the Canadian Wood Council (CWC) and the University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO) have been working closely on a number of research projects. UQO student groups have since produced a number of quality research papers in the area of Marketing, Information Technology, International Business and other areas. Below is a small sampling of just a few projects. Full projects are available for viewing and download in the Members Only area.

Road to India

India’s boom in industrial and residential construction, brought about by consistently good economic growth and increases in disposable income, is translating into a growing demand for wood and wood products by commercial and private customers.

The Indian market for softwood lumber and wood building products is estimated to be about $4.3 billion, with a 6% annual growth rate. Some segments, such as wooden furniture, are growing at much faster rates.

The level of imports has also increased dramatically: by 80% in the last five years. India’s shortages of domestic wood, its uncompetitive, low-tech domestic processing sector, and its increasingly liberal trade environment have created considerable opportunities for wood and value-added wood products imports. Rough wood is the biggest import item, accounting for almost US$820 million of the US$976 million in wood and wood products imports in 2004-05. While the market preference strongly favors tropical hardwoods, softwood imports have increased in recent years.
Canadian wood products exports to India (mainly furniture, veneer sheets and veneer-laminated plywood) reached US$1.6 million in 2004-05, accounting for 0.16% of Indian imports that year... Read Full Study

Identifying Barriers to Wood Use in Non Residential Construction in the Province of Quebec.

In order to help CWC improve its market prediction capabilities, the objective of this project is to identify wood industry key performance indicators used in leading countries in order to design a statistical ‘dashboard’ that includes data from the last ten years. This is to ensure not only their pertinence but also to help develop strategies relative to various scenarios et allow CWC to enhance market demand.

Leading countries that were used include Canada, the U.S., Japan, China, Russia, the U.K., France, Norway, Sweden and Finland…Read Full Study

Historical Evolution of the Wood Industry in the National Capital Region

CWC Conference Project

We must motivate Canadians to use wood. There are opportunities to expand market demand for interior wood finish for residential applications as well for commercial applications. The CWC reinforces the message about living with wood through creative communications including appropriate technical publications, magazines that deal with wood design and which brings new ideas, Wood Solutions Fairs and face to face discussions with wood designers during seminars.

For CWC, an important avenue to increase wood’s share of the construction market is through value added wood products. These value added products are generally the product of innovative technologies. In this regard, CWC created a partnership with OCRI, CATA, UQO and Carleton University to organize a conference series known as ‘Partnership Conference series’, which groups specifiers from both industries. These conferences not only provide an opportunity to gain valuable information but also a forum for meetings and exchange, which can lead to future research and development partnerships…
